See Things For What They Can Be

It’s Always Good

Tomorrow is TheWife’s birthday and she had the day off from work today wanted to spend it with TheGrands and Darcel to celebrate.
when we got there, we were greeted with hugs.

After awhile we went to ‘the beach’…it’s not really a beach but a place where you can be close to the water and enjoy some ‘quiet time’…except for the cars and trucks zooming by on the freeway. If you zone yourself, you don’t even notice the sounds….and the kids love it.

My knee was bothering me so I couldn’t do much walking and stayed behind while they walked ahead.

There is an area for sitting and it also has a bell and a plaque. Some of the bricks honors cancer survivors, those who lost the fight and family members giving them remembrance.

It’s called “Mary Ellen’s Bell”. After I took the pictures, I rang the bell and remembered my dad and my brother. The emotions that flooded me caught me by surprise in a way…I sat in silence and read the names and comments by others that were beneath my feet on the commemorative bricks of the survivors and loved ones who lost their beloved.

Sitting there gives relevance to the time we have to spend with the ones we love.
TheWife was really happy and the kids had a good time. It had been awhile since they saw UncleR.

I know I don’t always say how much I appreciate these moments, but it is always good to see them and spend time with them. I love to see the pictures Darcel and Charles post in blogs and on Facebook…miles and miles of smiles.

Outside Of Mama’s Eyes

Hey @MahoganyWayMama, I know you see the kids in pictures all the time, but here’s a look outside of your eyes.

They’re All Miracles

Welcome to the Second Edition of the  Black Birth Carnival. Hosted by Darcel of The Mahogany Way Birth Cafe and Nicole of Musings From The Mind of Sista Midwife.
The Topic: Not Without Our Fathers. So often we talk birth in women circles. We celebrate birth within the feminine community and forget that without the fathers our birth experiences would be non existent. June 17th marks the day many will celebrate fathers in this country. With that in mind we came up with our topic for this installment of the Black Birth Blog Carnival.
This post you will be updated with live links by Noon, linking back to the other participants posts.

I don’t know what the stats are for men of color to be present when their children are born, but I for one wouldn’t trade that for anything. It is definitely life changing.

I remember when TheWife was in labor at the hospital with Darcel. We didn’t know if we were having a boy or girl. I didn’t know if I was going into the delivery room or not. We didn’t attend any of those Lamaze classes (heck, I don’t know if they had them back then). So it’s time for her to go in and it wasn’t until then I was told to get myself ready. I’m in there nervous and ready. TheWife was in labor for hours so it wasn’t very long after, Darcel was born into this world. I was soooo happy and all smiles….I was so up there I knew then that as a man, that was the ultimate human experience. You see firsthand and robe yourself in as close a birth experience without giving birth, that you will have for the rest of your life. You see what the woman in your life goes through ….I can only imagine how home birth fathers can put into words their experiences.

Now Reg was a totally different experience. Apparently TheWife and her grandmother had made plans for the labor time at the hospital to be minimal…without telling me. I knew it was time for us to leave and couldn’t figure out what in the world they were waiting for. Her grandmother finally says it’s time to go. I’m driving like all get out but don’t take the freeway because it’s late with hardly any traffic. I keep checking on her to make sure everything is ok. We’re just about there and I could almost tell by the way she was positioning herself in the seat that things were getting or had already gotten to the point of, we really need to be at the hospital. I miss the turn into the parking lot, get it turned around and she says she’s not going to be able to go in so I run in and tell them my wife is having a baby and I remember a nurse getting a wheelchair and I told her it was beyond that. Before you know it my car is almost surrounded….next thing I know, Reg is born. I didn’t get to see his birth, (I was crowded out) but it was an experience I will never forget.

Experiencing child birth up close doesn’t stop with mine…I have had the pleasure to be there with two of My3Grands. Kiah was the first and Samuel was the third. Although I wasn’t there for Ava’s birth I still feel as if I was a part of it because TheWife and I were watching Kiah during Ava’s home birth. We got updates by phone from DaddyCharles. When we got the ok to come to there place, it still felt magical….like we were there the whole time.

I’m not sure if I captured the moments in words, what I had experienced with these five loving souls that are in my life. I don’t know if I am a different person versus not having the experience of child birth, but there is one thing I know for certain….the sounds of a woman struggling through the stages of labor, into giving birth….the sounds of a baby’s first cry, the sounds of joy expressed by all….can never be taken away….they are all miracles.

This Is My Yesterday

One of the advantages of working from home is that I don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn, but at the same time I don’t sleep in either. It was around 7:30 when TheWife wakes me. I get myself ready and we’re out the door just after eight.

I forgot to mention in my last post about the nails that I found in  the two rear tires after I moved them to the front. They probably went undetected due to the lack of weight put on the tires because the van is empty at the moment. After I put them on the front I then noticed right away how deflated they were, now due to the weight of the engine. Since that time I have had to spend money to inflate the tires and I was about to make sure this morning was my last time doing that.

I drop TheWife off at work about nine and head to WalMart. In my haste to get food shopping out of the way, I forgot to stop at a parts store to get a tire repair kit, then as I parted the threshold of WalMart remembered I can pick one up there.

I’ve used one of these before, years ago and was really pleased with the outcome. I like the handle on this set because the first one I had was like a screwdriver handle.

I didn’t get pictures during the process because if you don’t want to lose all of the air from the tire…if it isn’t flat…you need to move fast. But I did get pics after the test drive.

What air I did lose , was replaced using this portable air compressor.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the other motivating factor in doing this myself…I stopped at a gas station to see how much to plug one tire…$25.00.

Moving on, while in the automotive section I spot spark plugs and put those in the cart too…knowing I should get everything for the tune up at one time.

I think this van had been sitting for awhile because of the corrosion on the plugs….I don’t think you get that when a vehicle is driven regularly.

Darcel and The3Grands were still here while I was replacing the plugs….the kids sat in the van while I worked. They left just before I was finished with that and that is when I repaired the tires.

After the test drive, I hit the shower, finished drying and folding the clothes, and did the dishes.  By the time I sit to do this post, it was 10:00….checking email, facebook and what not. I finally give in with an unfinished post just after 11….what did it cost me to purchase the parts?….about $25.00.

I almost forgot about whipping up pancakes for Kiah and Darcel….hot dogs for Ava…more pancakes for Kiah….playtime outside…this not long after getting home from shopping. Picking up TheWife from work, before working on the van…..I did mention the laundry…didn’t I?

That was my yesterday….WhatrUWorkinOn?

Hey MahoganyMama!

I just wanna say
It’s your birthday
I just wanna say
It is today

I hope it’s a good one
Even if you don’t see the sun
I hope you have fun
When it’s all said and done

Nope it’s not here either
Don’t even look in the freezer
I can’t pretend
This will come to an end

At some point or other
I’d much rather drother
Be there right now
I’d give you a bow

To show some love
As tight as a glove
That goes on a hand
As sure as you stand

First Beach Day 2011

Yesterday was my first day at the beach this year and it was a mixture for me even though I had a good time overall.

Everyone had the day off except Charles…mine didn’t seem like a day off altogether, but that’s all I’m gonna say about that

It started out to be a cloudy day but slowly began to clear somewhat, becoming cloudy to partly cloudy. I heard that it rained at the oceanfront pretty heavy in the morning.

We didn’t see any rain at all even with the clouds. It was warm when we arrived and breezy! We had umbrellas and had to put them down not long after we set up.

The girls didn’t waste any time getting into the water…I cautiously stepped in and couldn’t believe how chilly it was as I watched them play.

Of course there was time for just chillin.

As I said before, it was cloudy all day. Darcel and I had noticed how this cloud looked as if it was reaching for this ship.

ooohhh nooo!!! it looks like that cloud is trying to get me!

it’s a good thing i’m equipped with my new retro
burning fuel stacked packaged excel when needed
system….haahaahaaa!!!!

so long cloud…cain’t touch this!

I guess the ship was too fast for the cloud….hmmmm, maybe the cloud was water logged.

It did look as if it might rain later on and it cooled off quite a bit. Even the sand lost its warmth.

That’s about the time I began to lose interest, but we stayed and the clouds broke up releasing the sun’s warming rays.

Me and TheWife went to Wal Mart yesterday morning to pick up a few things and a grill was one them. Nothing fancy…plain new charcoal burning grill.
As I grilled, I also started this post. This is my new toy…again, nothing fancy. This is my new Dell Inspiron mini. It’s perfect for what I need right now and I can expand so to speak if necessary. I connected my Logitech wireless mouse with ease. If I ever want to work from a larger screen, no problem…I can connect my 21 inch flat panel effortlessly. It’s a good thing I got it when I did. After the storm we had the other day and no electric for a day, my pc won’t even turn on. I have a lot of files I need to retrieve from that hd.

Oh yes…I’m still #workinon my meme which will be starting shortly!! I’m excited about it and hope you will join me when it is launched.

The do’s and don’ts will be coming soon along with how to link in for those who have never done it before.

That’s all I have for now…Whatr U Workin On?

I Made It

My first day back to work since I started my blog challenge was yesterday and it was interesting. I’m not gonna talk about it. I have come to the understanding ….again….that the best way for me to deal with work is to be quiet.

I have been so frustrated lately and the more I complained, the more I became, so you will really get the picture, enraged. So in order for me to keep my sanity, I must be quiet.

It was a warm November day yesterday in the 70’s, but today will be about 15 degrees cooler. I’m gonna miss yesterday. It could be worse, I could be in Minnesota 🙂 I do miss Minnessota. The area we were in was about 30 miles south of Minneapolis-St Paul. Burnsville. mmmmm.

One thing that fascinated me about that area was the bicycles. Everybody had one and I mean everyone. Not only that, but they ride them all year long….at least some of them do. I’m talking freezing cold, snow, ice, it didn’t matter. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing but day after day, as I drove to work I would see the same people bundled up real good and peddling their bikes.

Some were college students on their way to class, some were just going to work, and maybe some were taking a winter joy ride….brrrrr. I guess if you live in that environment for a period of time, you can get used to that.

Oh yeah, some of you may be wondering if I was in a good mood all day. Let’s just say that I was able to accomplish what I wanted and that was to get through the day. After all, it was the first day. I remember how I felt as I was driving home; allowing the work day to ease it’s way out of my mind and body. I began to relax and started thinking about what I would do when I got home. I had about a twenty minute ride home and it was later than usual so traffic wasn’t bad at all. It was thick in spots, but moving…key word.

When I got home, I said hello to Ava. She was on the floor playing and then I noticed Samuel getting excited sitting on Darcel’s lap, but before getting Samuel, I turned to say hi to Nakiah who was on the couch watching TV. I don’t think she looked up. I like how Samuel gets excited to see me when I get home. Of course it’s not the same as when he spots Mommy or Daddy, but I’ll take what he’s giving me.

It’ll be nice when I get my own place, no doubt I will surely miss these moments.

Some Time Out

I have been blessed with another day to fulfill and I am thankful for that. What will I do with this day? I haven’t made any special plans to do anything. Some Sunday’s are a laundry day for me if I don’t get it done on Saturday. This weekend I was able to get one load done late yesterday. I’ll get the other load today.

It is a bright sunny day and I just opened the blinds to allow the vitamin D to shine on in. It will no doubt warm up a tad in here but not much because it is not a hot sun this time of year….at least not here in Virginia Beach. I like being in an area that I can go about without heavy gear on in November.

I went to the Zoo with Darcel and the grandkids yesterday. I don’t get out much and she invited me along…mostly because she knew I needed it. I had been venting some frustration to Darcel lately and I’m sure she figured I needed a change of some sort…even if only for a couple of hours. It did help and I enjoyed the time with them. It wasn’t crowded and I think that made it more enjoyable.
Darcel took pictures and I keep forgetting I have a camera on my phone, so by the time I remember, we had passed all the large animals, but I did get a shot or two before leaving….how they got out of their environment remains to be told.

They weren’t wild so I guess it was ok.
